Past, Present, Future.
In the past, we had no community, and because of this, we had to hide. We weren't united enough to demand equal rights. Only when we began to develop communities and "gayborhoods" in places like San Francisco, Amsterdam, Dallas, Miami, Puerto Vallarta, and others, did we begin to grow in strength and successfully demand equal rights. Many of those places were only popular because of the bars.
Currently, many of those communities have faded, bought out by non-gay realtors, and much of the community has been replaced by dating apps that are run for profit, more so than for concern of people's needs. Certainly there are still effective resource centers, but both the bars and the dating apps are waning in their ability to maintain growth, despite expanding inclusivity.
In the future, what are we going to do as individuals when AI takes the majority of jobs? How will we survive, without sufficient money for food or rent or happiness? Alone, without community, there isn't much you can do unless you are particularly wealthy, which means you can be taken advantage of. Even if there is a Universal Basic Income, that would be basic, like living off of food stamps, creating dependency and slavery.
The reason we need to create a Gay City or Cities, is because the proverbial writing is on the wall for the future, we have learned from the past, and we are not happy with the present. Only together as a community can we do this, to create a place that welcomes all gay people and their allies as family. When we finish this, there will be no need to ever feel vulnerable again.
Even today we see Muslims creating their own cities in America, so why can't we? We have something powerful as a family, but as individuals, we feel alone because we are. Unlike many other groups, we share something special, and together that becomes exponentially abundant.
Cordially Yours,
